Wild and Scenic Film Festival Film Lineups – “Flock of Films”

“Flock of Films” Thursday September 24, Pageant Theatre in Chico 6 pm

Lights Out

“Lights Out” uncovers the issue of why Chicago is the most deadly city for migratory birds. Chicago’s location, building design, and light pollution all contribute to the window collisions that kill thousands of birds each year. Experts David Willard and Annette Prince discuss how one singular building can be responsible for so many deaths and why this is detrimental to the balance of the ecosystem. “Lights Out” highlights our responsibility to protect these birds during their incredible feat of migration and how simple the solution to save them is. The Bees & the Birds

California’s native bees are facing an uncertain future. The Bees and the Birds explores this unfolding environmental crisis through the lens of a vibrant community garden that has become a safe haven for native bees, birds, and other wildlife. Through macro cinematography and stories from local gardeners and scientists, we see how small-scale efforts can have large impacts for local biodiversity. filmfreeway.com/TheBeesandTheBirds

Wingspan

Over the past six years, wildlife and conservation photographer Joshua Asel has climbed the peaks of Pinnacles National Park countless times to document the critically endangered California condor population that calls this stunning mountain range home. Wingspan follows Joshua on one of his expeditions and explores the vital role photography plays in creating awe and awareness for these incredible animals

The Bird in My Backyard

In an urban backyard on Canada’s West Coast, a window salesman has created a living laboratory for investigating hummingbird behaviour. Follow citizen scientist, Eric Pittman, as he documents the journeys of two female Anna’s hummingbirds as they attempt to raise their young in his urban garden.

The Joy of Parrots

The golden-shouldered parrot holds the dubious honor of being among Australia’s most endangered birds. On a private cattle ranch, “Artemis Station”, work is underway to prevent their decline. Pastoralist Sue Shepherd has been collecting breeding data on the parrots for the last forty years, and the information she gathers on her nest-checks today will be instrumental in saving the golden-shouldered parrot. Between Moon & Tides

The citizen scientists featured in Between Moon Tides are attempting to save the sparrows by saving their nests—building simple “arks,” so that incoming moon tides lift, rather than drown, the nests. “What really drew me to this story was what the saltmarsh sparrow can teach us about extinction and climate change,” says Jaacks. “This seemed like a quiet but very important story about an otherwise unremarkable little brown bird. I hope that, by looking a little closer, audiences will appreciate how the story of climate change is really a local story.” theguardian.com/between-moon-tides Jason Jaacks / 2025

Tracking Kites

“Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management, Avian Research and Conservation Institute, and the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society team up to share how their research partnership has helped shape our understanding of the swallow-tailed kite and help to inform successful management strategies for this incredible bird. The recovery of this species guides the way to a positive vision of how we can recover species and the health of Wild Florida and our natural world, if we just understand the land on a deeper level and make better decisions going forward.” Benji Studt (Director) 2025

A Home in the Grass

Since 1970, North America has lost 3 billion birds. As grassland bird populations continue to decline, one conservationist’s act of devotion represents hope in a world where natural habitats are disappearing every day.
